design24seven: The other side of Jon

This Blog will be a selection of things I like, things that are going through my head (they've gotta go somewhere!) and things that inspire me and... things?!? It may end up pointless, it might come in handy or it could end up entertaining, I couldn't tell you?

Here's something different... Political Stuff!

Right, I did not write this before anybody thinks 'WHAT!?!' But I found this on a very... opinionated... Blog belonging to a guy called... erm... Alex Ellis Roswell. Who attempted to begin a political debate with me on my I VALUE THE ARTS post, for some reason. I just VALUE THE ARTS man... Back off with the Politics, i'm not having a debate with you. But anyway, moving on... I had a look through some of his posts which were basically him... moaning a lot about Politics, and I found this, which actually puts the taxes in perspective and I thought it was brilliant, so have a look. Its not very entertaining so if your here for a laugh, go watch a fat man singing on YouTube or something... adults talking here. But no seriously, Take a look:

'Suppose that once a week, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100.If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this..

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay £1.
The sixth would pay £3.
The seventh would pay £7.
The eighth would pay £12.
The ninth would pay £18.
And the tenth man (the richest) would pay £59.

So, that ' s what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every week and seemed quite happy with the arrangement until, one day, the owner caused them a little problem. "Since you are such good customers," he said, "I shall reduce the cost of your weekly beer by £20." Drinks for the ten men would now cost just £80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free but what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the £20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realized that £20 divided by six is £3.33 but if they subtracted that from everybody ' s share then not only would the first four men still be drinking for free but the fifth and sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.

So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fairer to reduce each man ' s bill by a higher percentage. They decided to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (a100% saving).
The sixth man now paid £2 instead of £3 (a 33% saving).
The seventh man now paid £5 instead of £7 (a 28% saving).
The eighth man now paid £9 instead of £12 (a 25% saving).
The ninth man now paid £14 instead of £18 (a 22% saving).
And the tenth man now paid £49 instead of £59 (a 16% saving).

Each of the last six was better off than before with the first four continuing to drink for free.

But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got £1 out of the £20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, "but he got £10!"

"Yeah, that ' s right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a £1 too. It ' s unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"

"That ' s true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get £10 back, when I only got £2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn ' t get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next week the tenth man did not show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important - there was not enough money between them to pay for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works.

The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy and they just might not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.'

Goodbye 2010 - My final post of the year

So this is actually my final post of the year, although I said this 2 posts ago... its time to drink, so I mean it this time!

First off, I want to say that 2010 has been one hell of a year, so much has happened and its been awesome! Starting design24seven was the best idea I have ever had and going for my second start-up business (UNFOLD Liverpool) will be the 2nd best idea i'll ever have, hopefully... but I will make sure of it! But on the journey of joining the business world I have met some great people who have given me some valuable advice and inspired me, whether they're clients, associates, start-up agencies, networkers or entrepreneurs. I wish you all an extremely successful 2011... and 2012... future! Thats easier.

Enough of that for now, here is something I found which CREEPS ME THE HELL OUT! Now as awesome of a concept as this is, and I assume it wont be available to us for a hell of a long time, but this is just brilliant/terrifying:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX-gTobCJHs

Take a look at that video, a new concept by Nokia and University of... somewhere... Ive forgot which uni, Oxford or Cambridge... but it is a concept they are working on for a new phone which is basically... Going to take over the world! The upgrade of it has feelings and everything! No it doesn't... but you never know? Im just glad I wont be around when i-robot actually happens!

But this is a pointless post really because, nobody wants to read blogs on NYE so I will take this opportunity to shut up and thank everybody that has participated to this year being so... BIG! And wish everybody a late Merry Christmas and early Happy New Year.

Thats it from me for 2010, so goodbye from me... and goodbye from him...

Mr.Jack Daniels: Bye!

All the best and of course... CHEERS :)

Oh yeah... Mr Toast - I got one!

Just one more thing I wanna get in before I go to bed... or check Facebook, Hotmail, Twitter and probably just Google (Damn body clock) then maybe go to bed... and watch TV...

Earlier in the year I posted MR.TOAST... and claimed that I wanted one, well... I got one. Somebody actually bought me one so thanks to Ruth Dunster for the Mr.Toast, it now sits comfortably... on my toaster, purely for comedy value :)

So thanks a lot for that,

Here he is in all his glory:

T-Shirts and Suits - A guide to the Business of Creativity

Oh wait, this is gonna be the last blog update of 2010! Scary. Well in this case I wont just have a rant, im going to talk about something productive, something helpful, something insightful... if thats a word?
And that topic is... A book! And its author! Surprised? I am... I read a book!
So right, Its been nearly 2 months since I registered design24seven and just to let people know, its going pretty well, thanks for asking (I know you didn't, but im bloody telling, haha).
But in no way is this meant slanderous to University, but I have learned more in the last 2 months than I did in 3 years of a degree through some of the amazing people I have met and the great resources I have been given access to. One of these resources is a book that I finished recently called 'T-Shirts and Suits - A guide to the Business of Creativity' written by David Parrish.
Now not only did I get the pleasure of meeting with David himself, who is a genuinely great guy (check out the unintentional alliteration) who gave me some priceless guidance and advice (and a free cup of coffee) but I was also given a copy of the book which after reading will prove to be a vital tool in the growth of design24seven!
David has worked with a lot of companies, one inparticular you have probably heard of, Smiling Wolf, who have always inspired me, and he has also worked in the creative industries himself, he has literally been there and done that.
Right, so the book, it legitimately is something which inspired me creatively and also being a new start-up, it cleared a lot of the finer details of business with great and relevant case-studies.
The book is on Amzon for about £12 or maybe £13, and whether you already own a business in the creative industries, you work in the industry or one day you wish to run your own, then this book is a must, and will prove to be very useful!
There is also a blog for T-Shirts and Suits and for anybody in or around the liverpool area, there are also T-Shirts and Suits networking events, and an i-phone app to download too... but not an Android app... which is unfortunate considering... I dont have an i-phone! But you cant win 'em all!
Infact, to save you the hassle of finding the blog, heres a link for you lazy arses:
http://blog.davidparrish.com/

But seriously, great book, and a great guy, and I look forward to our next meeting.

So that was a very serious blog post wasn't it? Check me out, chocolate makes me normal... Or I have overdosed on Roses, Celebrations and Danish Butter Cookies... for some reason? Cookies is a random addition to the 2 tins of choclolates... but they are nice! Although they were nicer when I was a kid... Ive forgot my point?!? Nevermind...

Merry New Year :)

Wow... Its been... Too long!

Right,
Here we go again, I havent really had much time for blog updates with moving into the new apartment and Christmas and... I'm making excuses... I just, kept putting it off.
So first off -

Merry Christmas to all and to all... Happy New Year

TED Ideas Worth Spreading

Hello :)

Right, sometimes I go on to TED (http://www.ted.com/) to check out some mental futuristic technology that I will never be able to afford to even see in real-life and to get some inspiration because I do that sometimes. So... Im on TED, click on Design, and see this for a title: 'How Pig parts make the world turn'. So I thought, this is either gonna be ridiculous, or genius, either way... im Blogging that mofo!

Heres the link to the video:
http://www.ted.com/talks/christien_meindertsma_on_pig_05049.html
But its not that good so dont watch it! Haha

Basically, it has a good point that pigs aren't just used for meat, there used in loads of things like toothpaste, bread, paint, BEER... But this woman (Christien Meindertsma... shes Dutch), followed a Pig for 3years to see like what happened to it and stuff, then made it into a book, and the book looks cool, she got the pigs ear tag on it and everything, so I like that.

But the point of me putting this in my blog is:
1. I already decided before I watched it
2. To point everybodys attention to ted.com
3. Because I love bacon and gammon
4. To ask the question:
If Pigs are part of this many things, other than bacon, isnt it a bit hypocritical for Vegetarians to not eat meat, but slap paint around containing part of a Pig, with a paintbrush which has Pig in. So there just... spreading dead Pig, with a Pig!?!

Think about it... or ignore... it makes no difference.

Thank you, Goodnight
